Hydrogen production

The mechanism of a hydrogen generator is rather simple and based on the principle of electrolysis of water. This is among the best method of producing highly purified hydrogen gas. Electrolyzer cell is the most important part of the hydrogen generator, where the electrolysis reaction takes place.

The cell comprises provide two electrodes (an anode and a cathode).  The ion exchange membrane is used to separate these two electrodes. A platinum catalyst is used at these electrodes in order to get highly purified hydrogen (99.9995%).

As soon as a continuous voltage is applied across the electrodes of the electrolyzer cell. Following are the that reactions take place:

At anode (positively charged electrode) :  2H2O - 4e = O2 + 4 H+
At the anode, two water molecules lose four electrons to form oxygen molecule (O2) and four hydrogen ion H+

At the cathode ( negatively charged electrode) :
4H+ + 4e = 2H2
 At cathode four hydrogen ions that are produced in anode gain four electrons and form two hydrogen molecules. The oxygen produced in the process is allowed to pass in the atmosphere.
